Storage providers use device-specific modules (DSMs) to extend capabilities of their storage solutions within the Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) framework. For example, storage providers might use a DSM to provide additional high availability or clustering capabilities with their storage solutions. DSMs are also provided.
Because DSMs are part of MPIO, they’re installed through the Multipath I/O feature (added as a Feature through the Add Roles and Features Wizard). Using the vendor’s DSM setup tool to install DSMs is recommended. However, you also can install DSMs through the INF file provided by the storage provider. In this case, installation is accomplished through the MPIO Administrative Tool on the DSM Install tab, shown in Figure 1-37.
