Packet filters refer to the firewall rules enabled for various components of DirectAccess and VPNs. The packet filters necessary for a given DirectAccess or VPN installation depend on what’s been deployed. This section examines some configuration items related to packet filters in general.
You configure packet filters in the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security console. Three sets of rules apply to a given Remote Access configuration: Inbound, Outbound, and Connection Security. The Inbound and Outbound rules are common firewall rules applied for ports and protocols involved in Remote Access. When installed, DirectAccess configures the packet filters according to the deployment chosen in the Getting Started Wizard or Remote Access Setup Wizard.
